Day 1: Roma and the Vatican 26 May 2006

Day 1 Roma and Vatican 26 May 2006

Reached KLIA and met the tour leader. True enough, as predicted by Yin Huan, my mum and my aunt, the sweet sounding tour leader is rather, plumb. No choice...was looking around for small change of swiss franc but to no avail. Managed to request for one whole row of seat from the friendly counter staff yeah! IT is a 747.

Didnt expect so many people on board the flight. It is MAS. The last time i took ThaiAirways there were not many passengers. This 747 is packed. I am lucky that i managed to get one whole row at the back, to others' envy. One wonder how come MAS make a loss with such a high load factor.

Reach Airport at 530am. Bon-jourie and the sky is all bright already...remote flight...so got to take shuttle bus to the terminal. The terminal is nowhere near KL standard, so run down. Waited another hour for the baggage. By the time we board our bus to city it is already close to 8am. Sunshine is blinding! So we join in the traffic jam to Roma, heading for the Vatican. Along the way, we noticed many many cars parked alongside the streets and very little gap in between the cars, good parking skills. The italians like small cars, easier to park and save fuel.

Met our handsome local tourguide at the Vatican. Somehow he looks like my cousin haha. He brought us first to St Peter's Bassilicca. We even went underground.

And then afterwards we went to the Collossium to take some pictures.

Then he went to show us a surprise. When you peep through the key hole of one mansion, you will be able to see the dome of the bassillicca, a delicate design by the architect.

We went for lunch afterwards and that ends the half day guided tour. I was desperately looking for coins to call Jiawen from Rome. She is backpacking in Europe for 3 months and wanted to meet me at Rome today, and i promised to call her once i reached Rome, could not do it cos' got no coins. While they were having lunch, i sneak out of the restaurant and go to the ever faithful tabacci uncle to change for coins. Finally i got hold of a public phone that work and accept coin. Told Jiawen to meet me at Spanish Steps afterwards at 230pm.

We went to the Trevi Fountain and this time i never make a wish. the last time i came was in 2002 with Zhou, about the same time (end May) and i made a wish, here i am, returning to the same place again. Went on to Spanish Steps.

After handing over my mum to the tour leader, i looked for Jiawen, she wore pink and i wore green, just nice. So she reckoned that my half-day guided tour was too fake, so she brought me around on foot one more time to walk the city again, and promise to help me take pictures. Yay, finally. So we went round the city. Argh....met mum and the tour leader at the most unlikely place while walking and have to do all the stupid intro, all secrets out!

Jiawen brought me to see the yandao street artists that she admired and took plenty of photos earlier in the morning. Not really that good looking lar =) and we had fun time till 4pm, where we head back to the meeting point. Couldnt see the Church of Skeleton cos we could not find the place and it was getting late. I treated her to a cup of jelato, while she practised her italian from classes that she learned in Pruggia. How nice, Italian embassy actually pays her to learn Italian in Pruggia!

We had our most unsatisfying dinner in a chinese restaurant. So oily and salty...really dampened our spirits. The Chinese meals in subsequent days were quite good though...lucky.

So there we are, back to the hotel at 8pm. i desperately need a sleep, didnt bathe...sleep str8 away and woke up 4am in the morning...but my ulcer still wont go away argh...
